Fishing in the Maldives

The Maldives is more than paradise above the water. Below it, the outer atolls hide some of the Indian Ocean's most productive and under-fished saltwater game. Here's where you find them.

NE Monsoon — Oct to April

Calm seas and clear water on the western side of the Maldives. Excellent GT action in the atolls. October to April is widely considered the best window for most species.

SW Monsoon — May to Sep

Recommended "monsoon-proof" zones:

  • Northern Maldives: Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu, Lhaviyani, Noonu
  • Central north: Raa, Baa
  • South-central: Dhaalu (sheltered lagoons only)

Avoid: Southern atolls (Addu, Gaafu Dhaalu) during peak monsoon.

During SW monsoon, western and southern atolls see stronger winds and rougher seas. The increased currents make these areas particularly productive as fish activity intensifies. Sheltered atolls and lagoon areas remain viable and highly productive.

The Maldives

World-Class Fishing
Across the Indian Ocean

The Maldives stretches more than 800km across the Indian Ocean, encompassing 26 natural atolls from north to south. Each atoll has its own character — different channel configurations, tidal flows, and species mix — but all share the same core qualities that make the Maldives one of the world's great saltwater fishing destinations.

We fish across various atolls depending on the season, targeting the conditions that stack the most productive grounds. Giant Trevally, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Marlin, and Dogtooth Tuna are all in play throughout the year — the key is knowing which atoll to be in and when.

Our expeditions are curated around the seasonal peak for each zone. We don't fish the same spot year-round — we move with the fish.
